Dr. Mary Ann East has spent her career empowering others through music. She has taught musicians ages 3-90+ in a wide-range of platforms from formal music education in Fairfax County Public Schools and George Mason University, to church and community choruses. She has witnessed the potential for music to empower those that create it.
Mary Ann is the Founder and Artistic Director of EmpowHER Music, engaging girls and young women in the DC metro area in becoming strong community leaders by strengthening their self-image through music, launching our first girl’s chorus Fall 2021.
Mary Ann is the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Capital Harmonia, a local community women’s chorus dedicated to bringing music for women’s voices and by women composers to the Washington DC area. The group brings musical performances to other local women’s organizations such as House of Ruth, AVON Walk for Breast Cancer, Women Giving Back, and others.
Mary Ann is the Program Director for Sentimental Journey Singers, a chorus for singers with dementia and their care partners through Encore Creativity for Older Adults. The chorus learns 3-part repertoire from the 1940s and 1950s and does some therapeutic music activities.
Mary Ann is the Music Director at Community of Faith United Methodist Church and was an Adjunct Professor at Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music at George Mason University for 15 years where she taught a variety of music and music education courses.
Mary Ann is also a frequent clinician and adjudicator in the Northern Virginia area and is the Owner of Monarch Music, LLC, providing quality private piano and voice lessons.
The common thread in all of these musical experiences is that of empowerment. Musicians find a place to express themselves, work together towards a common goal, and have a sense of self-worth for their contribution to a rehearsal, worship service, or performance.
Mary Ann earned her DMA in Music Education from Boston University, Master of Music is Vocal Performance and Choral Conducting at George Mason University, and her Bachelor of Music Education from Indiana University.
